The Ten Commandment and World Faiths Hike includes Organ recitals and free admission to the Phipps Conservatory* after the hike.  Optional tours include the Nationality Rooms located in the Cathedral of Learning on Pitt’s Campus, the Sikh Gurdwara, the  Hindu Jain Temple, and the Pittsburgh Buddhist Center over the next three Sundays..

A Scout is Reverent! Since  2006, over 5,500 people have attended the Ten Commandment and World Faiths Hike! Make sure that you don’t miss the fun of the 2018 hike!

What is a Ten Commandment and World Faiths Hike? It’s a unique and exciting way to embrace the concept of religious acceptance and respect, learn local history, participate in community service, and have fun.  And it’s a good way to work off that Thanksgiving dinner!

The hike is open to all Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturers, and their families. The leisurely and stroller friendly walk will be just under four miles, visiting ten religious institutions in the Shadyside and North Oakland sections of Pittsburgh. 

Ample FREE parking is available at Rodef Shalom Synagogue.  The Hike will start promptly at 8:45 a.m. at Rodef Shalom Synagogue on the corner of Fifth & Morewood Avenues in the Shadyside section of Pittsburgh.

The cost of the hike is $12.00 per hiker.  The fee includes a special patch, hot chocolate along the way, juice at lunch, and dessert.  ALL hikers must be registered and paid before commencing the hike.  Bring a bag lunch, water, snacks, AND two canned good items for the food bank.  Dress appropriately for the weather.

At each stop, for approximately 20 minutes, a member of the Clergy will discuss a specific Commandment, describe the basic theological tenets of their religion, and point out interesting architectural and historical aspects of their House of Worship.  They will also answer a few questions.  We will leisurely hike as one group to each place of worship in the order of the Commandments. 

Organ Recitals

Starting at 8:45 a.m., and at many of the stops along the way, hike participants will be able to listen to classical music and sing songs accompanied by the majestic organs in the Synagogue, Churches, and Cathedrals.  Scouts will also listen to a short presentation on how pipe organs make music.

Listen to and learn from clergy who are: Jewish, Anglican, Baptist, Byzantine Catholic, Buddhist, Roman Catholic, Christian Scientists, Hindu, Greek Orthodox, Muslim, and Zoroastrian. 

The hike will end at approximately 4:00 p.m. Small children are welcome and they may hike for free, but it is strongly recommended that you bring a stroller. 

All Scouts and Scouters MUST wear a Class “A” uniform.  *Uniform is required for free admission to Phipps Conservatory.

We have arranged special discounted optional tours of the University of Pittsburgh’s Nationality Rooms at 5:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.  Select this tour during check out to reserve your spot.

Tour the Hindu Jain Temple in Monroeville the following weekend on Sunday, December 1^st   at 11:30 a.m. and enjoy an after tour meal cooked at the Temple. 

Visit the Sikh Gurwara on Sunday December 8^th at 11:30 a.m. and sit in on a service and enjoy the experience of participating in a meal after the service with the Sikh community. 

 Visit the Pittsburgh Buddhist Center on December 22nd at 3:30 p.m. and learn about and participate in meditation and enjoy refreshments afterward.
