at University of Scouting

Senior Patrol Leader, Order of the Arrow & Den Chief Training
 

University of Scouting is ready to prepare for your future leadership positions now by attending one of our excellent youth leadership classes.  Our classes offersa unique opportunity to learn from experienced instructors and work with other youth leaders. This FREE* training for leadership positions within your Troop, Crew, and/or Ship is second to none! Come to develop your leadership skills, learn to be a valued mentor to other Scouts with whom you work, and meet new friends, too.

Choose one of the following classes:

*  Senior Patrol Leader Training

• *  Order of the Arrow - LLD & Elangomat Training

*  Den Chief Training

Every attendee will receive ONE complimentary University of Scouting event patch. Additional patches are available for purchase at $4.                                                               

Training is offered at no cost for in-council Scouts who register by noon on November 8, 2026.  A fee applies for: out-of-council Scouts, any walk-in registrations, lunch (optional for Den Chief and SPL), and the option to purchase an additional commemorative patch (optional). 

• Materials. Both Den Chief and SPL classes require participants to have a book specific to their roles.The opportunity to pre-order your materials ends Friday, October 30. If you do not pre-order the handbook during registration, you will need to purchase a copy on your own before attending the class. Please bring your copy to class.  NOTE: you may purchase a copy during registration; these will be delivered to your class.
• Lunch. Participants in the Den Chief and SPL Classes may bring a lunch or choose to purchase a Turkey or Vegetarian box lunch (which includes a sandwich, chips, a cookie, and a bottle of water) from the Sycamore Tom & Jerry's for $12 in advance when registering online. A limited amount of lunches will be available for purchase on site for $15.  The Scouts registered in the OA Lodge Leadership Training will be served a pizza lunch.
• Complimentary coffee, hot water for tea, and bug juice are provided throughout the day. 
• A Snack Shack will be available to purchase snacks, soda, and bottled water during break times. Bring extra money for this.

YOUTH CLASSES OFFERED

Choice #1: SENIOR PATROL LEADER TRAINING

Senior Patrol Leader Training is open to any Scout First Class and above who is either a Senior Patrol Leader (SPL), Assistant Patrol Leader (ASPL) – or aspires to be in this leadership role in the future.

This supplemental training introduces current SPLs and ASPLs – and those who aspire to these positions – to the “nuts and bolts” of troop operations in their units. The syllabus draws from existing training materials for SPLs as well as other sources. It is supplemental and not designed to replace any existing training. At this training, you’ll learn:

• How to Run a Patrol Leaders Council (PLC) Meeting
• Nuts and Bolts of a Troop Meeting
• How to Lead Games
• Communication
• How to Plan and Run a Troop Event
• Working with Adult Leaders

What to Bring: Bring your Senior Patrol Leader Handbook, paper, pencil, and your Scout Spirit. Please wear your full uniform.

Senior Patrol Leader Handbook Required: The Senior Patrol Leader Handbook is required for this class. You may purchase a copy during registration, and your book will be delivered directly to your class.

Book Order Deadline: The opportunity to pre-order your Senior Patrol Leader Handbook ends Friday, October 30. If you do not pre-order the handbook during registration, you will need to purchase a copy on your own before attending the class.

No registration fee for TFC-registered youth for training if registered on or before November 8th*. There is a fee for lunch (optional - purchased during online registration only), late registrations, and out-of-council Scouts. (See notes above in the General Information section.)

Fee for out-of-Council Scouts is $20 / Scout.

Choice #2: Order of the Arrow, Lodge Leadership Development & Elangomat Training

Have you already taken ILST/ILSC and NYLT and are looking for a new type of leadership training, or are you looking at getting involved in an OA leadership position? Look no further! This year Lowaneu Allanque is making our LLD more accessible than ever, providing a quality leadership experience that you can’t get from just any other training. Learn how our lodge is structured, how to get involved, and how to lead your unit to greatness with a syllabus specially designed for our area by the national organization of the Order of the Arrow. This class has content for both youth and adults. Youth MUST register on the University of Scouting Youth Class Site.  PREREQUISITE:  Class is open to CURRENT OA Members only.  Please Note: Pizza lunch will be provided for OA Training

Choice #3: DEN CHIEF + Optional Cit in Community + First Class Requirement 9a

We're pleased to announce a brand new day that will encompass a full day of training:  Den Chief in the morning and an optional Citizenship in the Community session in the afternoon.  Scouts will be led by a Citizenship in the Community Merit Badge Counselor and other experienced leaders in the afternoon toward completing specific requirements of this merit badge and also First Class Requirement 9a
 

Morning Class: Den Chief Training -  This course is designed to prepare Scouts BSA youth to serve as Den Chiefs with a Cub Scout Pack. Participants will learn leadership skills, games, songs, and techniques to support Den Leaders while serving as positive role models for younger Scouts. The training emphasizes responsibility, communication, and the importance of mentoring Cub Scouts as they progress in their Scouting journey. Upon completion, Scouts will be ready to contribute meaningfully to their pack.

What to Bring: Bring your Den Chief Handbook, paper, pencil, and your Scout Spirit. Please wear your full uniform.

Afternoon Class  - Optional opportunity for Scouts enrolled in Den Chief Training to fulfill some CITC requirements and First Class Retirement 9A. Scouts do not have to stay for the last two periods but they may not roam the school or sit in with a parent.  Scouts should come prepared with questions about the consitutional rights and obligations of a US Citizen.
