STEM Careers Conference: Solving the World's Problems

Event Details

EVENT CANCELED

Keeping our scouts and scouters safe and healthy is our first priority. In an abundance of caution over the global Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, NCAC’s April 11th, 2020 STEM Careers Conference is canceled. We regret that prudence dictates this decision and we thank the many volunteers, exhibitors and organizations who dedicated their time preparing for this event.

We will announce the rescheduled date (likely to be in spring 2021) as soon as we make a decision and look forward to seeing you then!

You may learn more about the local impact of coronavirus (COVID-19) from the Government of the District of Columbia's website and we encourage you to take standard precautions outlined on this Centers For Disease Control and Prevention web page, including hand washing, covering coughs and sneezes, and staying home if you are ill.

The NCAC STEM committee is planning a STEM Careers Conference at the University of Maryland for older youth, grades 7-11. The theme is "Solve the World's Problems" based on the UMD motto in their AGNR department (see www.agnr.umd.edu). Special note: This year is the fiftieth anniversary of Earth Day!

Event Overview

Our day will have a few keynote speakers, hands-on workshops, a Career Fair of STEM organizations/professional societies, and demonstrations. We will welcome 350 youth + 100 parents and ~100 volunteers. Special thanks to the University of Maryland for their support!

Youth will have the opportunity to attend three workshops during the day.  During registration, please pick a theme for each time block:

  • Establish a Healthy Food System and Ensure Global Food & Nutritional Security
  • Ensure a Clean and Healthy Chesapeake Bay
  • Advance Innovative, Profitable, and  Sustainable Agricultural Production Systems
  • Improve Human, Animal and Environmental Health
  • Optimize Urban Environments Through Design, Green Technology, and Community Engagement
